William Walker Atkinson

Mindset & BeliefSpiritual Growth

A lawyer turned publisher who wrote more of this literature than almost anyone, much of it under other names.

After a breakdown he attributed to overwork, Atkinson recovered through mental practice and devoted himself to writing about it. He edited New Thought magazine and produced a vast catalogue under his own name and pseudonyms including Yogi Ramacharaka and Theron Q. Dumont.

His Thought Vibration is among the first books to lay out the attraction idea as a stated principle.

Ideas in practice

Understand the teaching.

01

Attention is magnetic

What you dwell on, you notice more of, act on more readily and attract more of. His mechanism is mystical; the observation is practical.

02

Mental discipline is trainable

He wrote drills, not just doctrine — concentration treated as a skill with exercises.

03

East and West belong together

His Ramacharaka books introduced yogic breathing and concentration to a mass American audience.

Choosing an edition

These titles are long out of copyright, so editions range from careful annotated reprints to hasty print-on-demand scans. Before buying, check that the listing names a publisher, shows a readable interior sample, and keeps the original chapter structure intact.

Historical context

Atkinson published under many pseudonyms, and attributions — especially for The Kybalion — are debated by scholars. Treat the authorship stories as contested and the metaphysical claims as historical philosophy rather than science.
