Mary Baker Eddy
Founder of Christian Science and author of one of the most widely circulated metaphysical texts in American history.
After a period of illness and study that included time with Quimby, Eddy set out a system of spiritual healing grounded in her reading of scripture. She published Science and Health in 1875 and organized a church, a college, and later a newspaper around it.
Her insistence on the primacy of mind over matter placed her at the center of the era's metaphysical debates, and her institutional work gave those ideas an unusually durable structure.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures

“To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.”
— Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1875)
Why this master matters
Eddy turned a set of healing ideas into an institution that outlived her by more than a century — a church, a college, a publishing house and a Pulitzer-winning newspaper. Whatever a reader concludes about her theology, she is the proof that metaphysical ideas need structure to survive.
Ideas in practice
Understand the teaching.
01
Spirit before circumstance
Eddy reads reality as fundamentally spiritual, with material appearances downstream of it — the boldest version of a claim the whole movement makes more softly.
02
Prayer as understanding
For her, prayer is not petition but a disciplined correction of thought toward what she held to be true.
03
Daily, unglamorous study
Her system assumes regular reading and regular practice, not occasional inspiration.

Historical context
Eddy's writing is religious teaching from the nineteenth century, including views on illness and medicine that most readers today will not share. Read it for its historical weight and its influence on later teachers, not as health guidance.
