Emile Coué
The French pharmacist whose daily formula became the most repeated sentence in self-help history.
Coué noticed that patients improved more when he praised a remedy, and built a method of conscious autosuggestion around the observation. His clinic at Nancy treated thousands without charge.
His formula — every day, in every way, I am getting better and better — swept Europe and America in the 1920s and set the template for the modern affirmation.

Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion

“Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.”
— Emile Coué, Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion (1922)
Why this master matters
Coué was a French pharmacist whose work on suggestion drew crowds across Europe and America, and whose famous formula is the ancestor of every affirmation practised since. Modern research on placebo and expectancy effects has, in broad terms, vindicated his central observation.
Ideas in practice
Understand the teaching.
01
Imagination beats willpower
His law of reversed effort: when will and imagination conflict, imagination wins. Straining harder makes it worse.
02
Effortless repetition
The formula is to be murmured lightly, twenty times, morning and night — deliberately without strain.
03
Expectancy is physical
Coué observed that what patients expected changed what they experienced, long before placebo research had a name.

Historical context
Coué worked with patients a century ago and made claims about physical healing that are not medical advice. Read him as the origin of affirmation practice, and see a clinician for anything clinical.
